Sierra Mar hotel is built on a picturesque, well cultivated hillside near the charming village of Chivirico, in a mountainous area only 2 hours from Santiago de Cuba. The hotel has stunning views of the bay & Sierra Maestra Mountains, with impressively kept grounds stretching down to the beach (there is a guest escalator for returning uphill). 

Sierra Mar offers an excellent range of activities, including basketball, tennis, cycling & horse riding, while there is also a children’s club & separate area in the impressive pool. Sierra Mar also provides outstanding snorkelling around the beautiful coral only 50 yards from the shore, where you will find a variety of fish & even dolphins. Other watersports available include windsurfing, sailing, kayaks & scuba diving.

Brisas Sierra Mar serves good food from its beach grill, snack bar & buffet restaurant. There is also a Cuban a la carte restaurant & charming ‘ecological restaurant’ near the beach, though reservations may be required at both. The hotel’s lobby bar has a resident pianist &, like Sierra Mar’s other 2 bars, serves great cocktails.

The hillside location means many stairs &, though there are also several lifts, this resort may not suit guests with mobility issues.

The Great National Park, covering around 38,000 hectares across the provinces of Granma, Santiago de Cuba and Guantánamo. This is not only the site of the highest point on the Island, the Pico Turquino (1,974 metres above sea level), but also the peaks of Cuba, Caracas and Magdalena, ideal for mountain climbing. Of particular interest to visitors is the place known as El Saltón-Cedrón, ideal for ecotourism and health tourism. You’ll find an array of endemic species here, including, and birds such as Carta Cuba, Tocororo and Zunzun. This park contains many sites of historical interest, such as La Plata, which served as Fidel Castro’s headquarters in the late 1950s.

Pico Turquino National Park

The Pico Turquino National Park is in the Sierra Maestra Mountains, the biggest mountain range that conforms a scenario of 17 thousand hectares of rivers, forests, valleys and summits crowned by this elevation. This place with a great variety of well-preserved species of flora and fauna is one of the most important protected areas in Cuba. Calls the attention the variety and the state of conservation of the landscapes, with a great variety of species of the flora and the fauna, some endemic ones as the Sabicú, the Savin, the Oak of Maestra, ferns and birds like the Cartacuba, the Tocororo and the Zunzún. This Park contains the highest mountains in the country, Turquino Peak (1974 meters above sea level) and it is considered by its natural values and also for the place that occupies in the national history as a Cuban symbol. You can reach the Turquino Peak, in an easier and quickly route starting in Las Cuevas, ideal if you want to reach the top of it. If you prefer to enjoy a more historic route, you must take the trail starting in Alto del Naranjo, this route passes by Comandancia de la Plata and crosses Sierra Maestra.
