About Hanabanilla
Hanabanilla Hotel enjoys a superb position on the north flank of Lago Habananilla, a lovely lake framed by the dramatic Sierra Escambray mountains. The hotel is a good base for hiking or horse-back rides into the mountains, or for fishing. It is a great 2 night stopover if you are doing the Caraterra Central through Cuba.
Getting there is quite an adventure. Expect to get lost at least once, especially at night. But there always seems to be some local around to help out. Depending on the water level of the lake the road to the hotel might be several metres under it. If you don't arrive too late at night you (not the car) will ferried by small boat the short distance to hotel, otherwise you'll have to find your own way along a short trail that weaves around the lake and across the dam.
The modernist Bauhaus design is similar to scores of Soviet-era edifices erected since the Revolution. The 125 bedrooms are air-conditioned and fitted with functional utility furnishings, but also feature satellite TVs, telephones, and bathrooms recently refitted with modern fixtures.
Don't raise your hopes up in the two restaurants, where the range and quality of food leave much to be desired. And you'll either love or hate the disco, which on weekends kicks out noise to wake the dead. The large swimming pool also gets lively with families. Your fellow guests are sure to be Cubans, so it's a good chance to mingle with locals.
The real draw is the mountain lake. Here, you can go boating and fish for large-mouth bass (the largest specimens ever caught in Cuba came from this lake). The mountain vegetation is tropical/jungle-like with huge Royal Palms everywhere. It is highly recommended you take your boat to have lunch or dinner at the remote lake-side Río Negro Restaurant.
The Hotel Hanabanilla itself is nothing to die for, but the subtropical mountain lake is.
