About  Velasco

If you are looking for an attractive boutique hotel which is perfectly placed for enjoying central Matanzas, you will have a memorable time at Hotel Encanto Velasco.

A stay at Encanto Velasco is like stepping back in time with stunning colonial features like high, ornate ceilings, marble columns & a beautifully designed bar. The hotel was renovated in 2011 & provides a wonderful mix of colonial & neo-classical features, together with modern comforts. Fronting the main plaza of Matanzas, Velasco is only 50 yards from the famous Sauto theatre, one of Cuba’s national treasures. It is also a short walk from Matanzas Bay & numerous bars & restaurants.

The large atrium in the centre of Velasco’s restaurant gives it a comfortable airy feel, even on the hottest days, & the restaurant serves good quality food at reasonable price, though breakfast can be fairly basic. The bar at Velasco is particularly attractive with beautiful wooden features & great service from friendly staff. The coffee here is also not to be missed.

Velasco hotel has no lift so guests with mobility issues may not benefit from the stunning views afforded from top floor rooms. But, whatever your mobility, if you want stunning surroundings in an unbeatable location, you will not find anywhere better in Matanzas.

Monserrat Heights Viewpoint

Monserrat Heights is a pleasant park that's also the site of La Ermita de Monserrat, a handsome, Colonial-Spanish style church. Built in 1875, the church is a shrine to the patron saint of Catalonians who immigrated to Cuba. This viewpoint has a spectacular view of the city and the bay, and the opposite direction is of the Yumuri River valley. There is also a snack bar in the park where you can refresh yourself.

Tropicana Matanzas

This nightspot under the stars, modelled on the famous Tropicana cabaret in Havana, is just 20 minutes' drive from Varadero. An attractive option for enjoying the finest Cuban cocktails and a wide range of music.

Plaza de la Vigía

A little overwhelmed by passing traffic, this landmark square is the cultural hub of Matanzas, with the Matanzas Provincial Museum on one corner and the magnificent, neoclassical Sauto Theater taking up a whole side. In the middle of the square is the marble statue of an anonymous independence fighter known as El Soldado Desconocido (The Unknown Soldier). A couple of cafés face the theater and there's a modern art gallery to browse.

Sala de Conciertos José White

This exquisite, neoclassical concert hall is named after a 19th-century violinist/composer who was exiled for his nationalist leanings. It was the first place that danzón, Cuba's national dance, was performed.
